My brother emailed the other day and he and Mardie have safely arrived in Ohio at her brother's place. I guess he contacted some of our relatives in New York about visiting, and learned that my mother's cousin, Joanne, passed away nearly a year and a half ago. Like my mom, she was the main communicator for that side of the family, so that's probably why we never heard. She was always very outgoing and kind to us whenever we visited back there, which wasn't very often, and she was the only relative who had kids anywhere near our age. My great aunt Helen seemed to have a running feud with her, feeling like she was stealing all of our attention. The last time I was back there was a stop off for a few hours when I was driving home to CA from New Hampshire in February of 1992. When I called to see about visiting, she told me, "Oh, I'll be at work, but you can just walk in the side door. The dog will probably bark at you, but he'll stay on the couch. You can just take a shower and then come and meet me for lunch." Amazing that in 1992 there were still places in this country where people don't lock their doors when they leave the house.

We had lunch at the Burger King in the next town where she worked(Andover being so small it has no major businesses of its own). I feel a little sad to hear she's gone, but I didn't really know her all that well. I assume her two daughters are still in the area - I should get in touch with them, I suppose. And I have no idea if my great aunt is still around - she would be in her mid-90's, I guess. I am so lousy at keeping in touch, but I never really knew these people all that well, aside from two or three visits over a space of 25 years, each entailing a week's drive either way. They never have visited this side of the country.
