Avalon has been climbing into bed with us at 3am almost every night recently. Sometimes I can put her off by getting her a glass of water, or just waiting till she falls back asleep and putting her back in her own bed. Last night, though, every time she was begin to settle down, she'd start crying again. We finally both got up and she told me, "Hurt," and pointed to her ear. I gave her some children's Motrin and we watched some cartoons until she felt like lying down again.

Now, I don't mind her climbing in with us (especially if she doesn't feel well), though John is very territorial about his bed, and often gets cranky when he wakes up and finds her there. However, since he's sound asleep when this happens, it's always me that moves over and makes room. So there I am, squished between the 800-lb gorilla* and the toddler who sleeps like a linebacker. I'm usually wedged on my side with my arms in weird positions, and I'm nudged awake whenever anybody moves, or my arms fall asleep, whichever happens first. It does not usually result in a night of restful sleep.

This worked better when we had a CA king - size bed; queen-size is fine for two, but add more, even a smaller-than full-size one and it gets a little cramped. It's hard enough facing the alarm in the morning, but you might as well get up because you're not comfortable anyway.

I made a doctor appointment for her to have her ear checked out, but since it doesn't seem to bother her all the time, I made it for Wednesday. Angus has no school, and John will more easily be able to juggle it. I hope it's not a another version of the Foot Drama, in which she often comes and pitifully shows us her poor pained tootsie whenever there's something she doesn't want to do.
