"Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you..."

So, I occasionally check out the tea tag (mostly looking for odd stuff), and along with neat images of tea cups and teapots, it seems the cool thing for the kids to do is take a picture of your canned ice tea and post it. I'm not sure why, but it's mostly Arizona brand, with captions like mmm, yum, my favorite etc. The next most common thing is a photo of a miniskirted lap, with hands holding a cuppa. Or a tea pot on a stack of books.

And what is it with tea imagery being labelled hipster and vintage? Last I knew, it wasn't exclusively those things.

"What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson, Joltin' Joe has left and gone away..."

Anyway. I picked this up at the 99¢ Only store while waiting for the bus. While this is still an Arizona can, I think Joe must be sad to wind up on the shelf there; he certainly looks it. Doesn't bode well. Arnold Palmer on the same can is going great guns, while poor Joe is shelved among the off-import coconut juice and the relabeled Monster coffee/energy drinks originally intended for sale in Korea.

Kind of reminded me of the coffee Coke they test marketed around here a few years ago. Coffee, but carbonated and sweet, with a tart undertone which I didn’t care for, like old burned gas station coffee. Not a big black coffee drinker anyway, so not for me. Sorry, Joe.

Not his first association with coffee - he used to plug Mr. Coffee machines when I was a kid and drip coffee machines were a new thing.

Song of the Lonely Mountain

I'd heard Neil Finn was doing the end credit song to The Hobbit movie; I'd thought I'd have to go see the movie or buy the soundtrack to hear it!  I know Crowded House songs have been featured in soundtracks before, and I know his brother Tim has done credits songs before, but this is the first one I've heard Neil doing.*  Quite a bit different from his usual songwriting - much more orchestral and ethereal-sounding, although of course I've only listened so far on a tinny single Nook speaker...

In other observations about this movie, after so much Sherlock watching lately, which most people I know are clueless about, it's slightly weird to notice six-foot-tall images of Martin Freeman's face suddenly looking out from all the bus stop signage in the last week or so.

----------------
*I take that back - he did the soundtrack to a film called Rain in 2001, which I haven't seen or heard, unfortunately.  I remember my Finn email list talking about that one, but it's not widely available here.

And so comes fall, the days get shorter again, another school year starts. Angus is starting high school, though not at the one he thought, Gareth is in his last year of middle school, and Avalon in her first year of it. Angus has been taller than me since last Christmas, and I just realized a couple of days (when I was trying to figure out t-shirt sizes), that Gareth is about even with me - he hasn't even turned 13 yet! And Avalon, at 11, wears a size 8 women's shoe now - still two sizes smaller than me, but about the average women's shoe size. Cripes!

She's starting in band this year and she's decided she'll try learning my old alto sax. She took it in to school today for the first time, but this weekend we'll take it in for a tune-up, and possibly renting one for a few weeks while it's being fixed up. I don't think it needs a complete overhaul, but it's been quite a while since I played it. It'll be the third generation it's been played - it was my mom's in high school, probably in the mid 50's? Anyhow, today at lunch I ran out to a nearby music store (I'd thought this one was just guitars, but apparently they do band instruments as well), and picked up her beginning music book, a new ligature for the mouthpiece (the old one is missing a screw) and some reeds. Sheesh. Those have gotten steep since I last bought any; they want almost $9 for three of them! At the store, looking in the cases at the flutes and piccolos, and checking out the cases - the original one is starting to fall apart - I was feeling some serious nostalgia, being overcome with marching band memories. Although the last band I was in did not march. It was called Band X, and we participated in parades on the back of a couple of flatbed semis. We were billed as the world's largest non-marching marching band. At football games, we did not march onto the field for half-time; we boogied. Think Steve Martin in his "Wild and Crazy Guy" act.

Where was I the other day when I heard a marching band playing 25 or 6 to 4? I think it was even the same arrangement we used to play.

[livejournal.com profile] vwsrmylife doesn't post here anymore, but I follow her other places. She belongs to a community marching band for adults in her area - it'd be great if there were something like that around here. There are community bands, but generally they're more orchestral or symphonic-type groups associated with the city and want people who are a little better than rusty amateurs. I should check with the community colleges - Band X actually was associated with the junior college I went to.

[livejournal.com profile] runsamuck just called me. He said the band teacher says they don't have a storage place for instruments, so she's going to have carry it back and forth every day, and I'm assuming, to all her classes, as that school no longer has lockers. When I went there, band had a storage room for instruments. What the heck? I know it starts feeling really heavy taking it back and forth to school, and I can't imagine have to haul it with you for all your classes. What about people learning the tuba? Do they expect everyone to play the piccolo, so it'll fit in your backpack?

Farewell to Mr. Jobs...

[Error: unknown template qotd]

Posted to Animated Adulthood (Gather.com):

NPR: Apple Visionary Steve Jobs dies at 56

While I'm more of a Microsoft user, I can't say I'm totally without influence by Steve Jobs creations, and I will not deny the world has lost a creative genius.  Steve Jobs is credited with being the first to make computers available to the average person, kickstarting the music download industry, and changing the way we purchase and listen to music.  As a family, we own several iPods of varying sizes (mostly older models, though), and I've been a user of iTunes for a number of years.  He also had a hand in getting what has become a large part of the movie industry started.

In 1986, I was attending Humboldt State University, and was excited to get tickets to a two-day animation film festival, the second day of which was entirely computer animation.  It was extraordinarily expensive at the time - I believe I remember a quote of about $10,000 per hour of animation to produce, using very large supercomputers, so most of what existed then were shorts.  One of the shorts I saw then, sitting in the dark in a college auditorium, was by a new company (most of them were) of a large and a small desk lamp interacting - the large one acted as if it were a parent, while the small one hopped about, balanced on a ball and generally acted like a puppy.

According to NPR article above:

Jobs was eventually fired in a 1985 boardroom coup led by John Sculley — the man Jobs himself had hired to be CEO of Apple. But Jobs was driven to make computers vehicles for creativity, and after he left Apple, he purchased a little-known division of Lucas film and renamed it Pixar. In 1995, Pixar released the first animated feature to be done entirely on computers. That film, Toy Story, was a huge success, and Pixar followed it with other big hits including Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles and Finding Nemo.

(my emphasis added)

Luxo Jr., above, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1987 for best animated short and  later became part of Pixar's logo; he can be seen at the beginning of every Pixar movie, forming the "i" in the name.

While sometimes I complain about how some animation is "too" computer generated, Jobs set it on an inexorable path, and computer animation is now found in almost every kind of visual entertainment, sometimes where you might not even suspect it.

On Facebook, the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco quoted a statement by John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, Pixar's heads:

"Steve Jobs was an extraordinary visionary, our very dear friend and the guiding light of the Pixar family. He saw the potential of what Pixar could be before the rest of us, and beyond what anyone ever imagined. Steve took a chance on us and believed in our crazy dream of making computer animated films; the one thing he always said was to simply ‘make it great.’ He is why Pixar turned out the way we did and his strength, integrity and love of life has made us all better people. He will forever be a part of Pixar’s DNA. Our hearts go out to his wife Laurene and their children during this incredibly difficult time."

Good-bye, Mr. Jobs.  You'll be missed.

Google doodle for Freddie Mercury's 65th birthday....

Go to the Google home page right now and click the gold arrow (or you can do it below if you like, but there's a nice image collage there as well), to see a great little 80's-video-game-inspired animation to salute what would have been Freddie Mercury's 65th birthday using the Queen track "Don't Stop Me Now." Freddie passed away in 1991, but the driving force behind Queen will always be remembered.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but Night at the Opera was the soundtrack for many a weekend night back in the 80's for me...

Of Obsession, Love and Interspecies Relationships...

(I started a group at Gather.com for grownup fans of all kinds of animation...this was originally posted there. I'm sure you guys, being far more internet savvy than the folks over there, have all seen it already...)

About six years ago, I came across a funny little Flash web series from Korea, made by animators SamBakZa. If there's one thing I love, it's a story that's understandable whatever your language. Simply drawn, but extremely well animated if (I wish certain other of my favorite shows were this smooth), they're set to some catchy K-pop/rock songs, which I find myself humming even if I don't know the words. They can be found at the animators' Korean site, or at Newgrounds (the North American community, sort of YouTube for Flash). They also can be found at YouTube, where some have English subtitles for the songs, but they're not really necessary to enjoy the animation; in terms of quality, they are probably best viewed at the sites where the creators first submitted them. For a very long time I was only aware of the first two, then recently I came across some fanart that directed me to the final three in the series. As a rule, I generally avoid rabid cuteness, but in this case it overwhelmed me and now I must inflict it on everyone else. XD All of these shorts are around 5 minutes long.

There She Is was intended to be a stand-alone animation. It involved a reluctant male cat and a rather obsessive female rabbit, who meet at the vending machines in the local park. oops forgot the cut-tag, sorry for clogging your FL... )

One of you here on my friends list here turned me on to Great Big Sea a while ago, I can't remember who it was - but I've always loved folk, celtic and sea songs anyway, so it was a no-brainer for me. I enjoyed it and other albums by them are now on my wishlist for eventual purchase. As a matter fact, when I went out on the R/V Jordan a couple of years ago, it wound up being part of our soundtrack while we were tagging sharks, as we took turns playing peoples iPods over the PA system while we were working.

Amazon has a lot of free stuff every week, and I've enjoyed quite a few of their compilations with new (or new-to-me, anyway) artists. Lately, I been listening to an album by Sister Hazel, which really reminds me of Great Big Sea, although in reviews, I also see comparisons to the Eagles, the Doobie Brothers and Tom Petty (which I really don't see). I know they've been around for awhile, but this is the first time I've ever really listened to them, and boy have I missed out. It's a completely free download from Amazon right now, so go get it and give it a listen! Hope you enjoy...

Martini in the Morning...

My brother Doug turned my dad on to this station when it was still on the radio. When that station changed formats (as do most of the ones I enjoy), it became a web station. Lounge music is not my everyday listening, but I turn it on sometimes when I'm in the mood for it - or when I'm remembering what he liked to listen to. They're struggling to pay the bills right now or "get a real job" so I think I'll make a donation in memory of my dad, so it can stay up.

Plus they have a ton of recipes for martinis! XD

Martini in the Morning...(Home)

The Last Support Appeal, It's the last time we'll ask for listener support. As Karen likes to say, it's time to "Sink or Swim." What she really means is either Brad makes this work now, or he gets a "Real" job. With a real job for Brad, MITM goes away. While commercial revenue MUST replace the listener support model we've relied on since 2006, we will continue to accept monthly support payments. We will NOT, however, conduct these embarrassing listener beg-a-thons. So, by September, if we ALL start using the Miracle Martini Player here, we'll be able to pay our bills and stay on the air without these periodic panicky listener support campaigns. The current campaign ends today (if you're reading this on Sunday 7/17/11), we're not even close yet, to having enough money in the bank to be able to stay afloat till then. But we are as tired of talking about money as you are of hearing about it. So, if you haven't already (we started this on May 19th), and you find this music worth keeping around, please click here Click here to help us keep the music playing!

At the same time, I'm a little chagrined to realize this is what Rod Stewart is now doing - not that I was a big fan of him back in the day, anyway. And Dad's first love was swing and he couldn't stand Frank Sinatra.

Well, I've done it and bought tickets. I haven't gone to see Neil Finn (or Crowded House) the last 3-4 times he's been in the area (this was the last time I saw him - crap, in 2003!!). Next month he's going to be playing at some divey bar/venue in Costa Mesa, the next city over from me, about a block away from our local DMV. It's in a strip mall, for pete's sake, with a Rally's Burgers on the corner - or it used to be a Rally's, I think now it's Mexican food.

He's playing with his wife and another musician in a new (side?) project called Pajama Club. Interestingly, Sharon is playing bass (I didn't even know she was a musician, I had thought she was an artist), and he's playing drums for a change. I think [livejournal.com profile] runsamuck and I should be able to scrape together $20 apiece for a venue we could almost ride bikes to, although we probably won't, given the time it'll be over. Should be interesting! Although I am gonna get flack that we haven't been to see Louis Black or been to the Blues Festival in the meantime...

Concert...

So, backtracking a couple of weeks (I just haven't had the time/access to sit down and make a proper post), [livejournal.com profile] runsamuck and I were gifted with two tickets to see Star Wars in Concert at the Hollywood Bowl. John was initially reluctant because 1) he'd seen something similar on TV once, and 2) when I mentioned taking the bus up there, he thought I meant getting on the regular LA Transit bus, with a stop every block. No, no, I assured him, it was an express bus run by a company that just runs shuttles straight up there. I tried to buy tickets online the day before (I couldn't), and when we went to Lakewood to board, it turned out they stop selling a couple of weeks before the event, presumably so there are enough for the people who just show up - like us; something to remember if we ever get tickets for something up there again. John had never been to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl before; I think I went there once before to see Garrison Keillor. I can't think of the place without remembering the Bugs Bunny cartoons with the opera singer.

Whee! We get to go see this tonight because some friends of mine bought tickets, but then one of them had to go out of town, and she didn't want to go by herself. Mainly because it was his idea, and she'd rather go to the roller derby. She threatened to take my daughter along with her; that might be a good idea. She told me they even have leagues for girls her age, and given what an instigator Avalon is, maybe she'd be good at it. Maybe it would get her to lay off her brother - she and Gareth both got put on computer restriction the other day because I told them about SIX TIMES to leave each other the hell alone. BECAUSE GODDAMMIT MY BED IS NOT A CAGE-MATCH RING.

But I digress. John's mom is taking the kids for the evening and we're going to take the special bus from Lakewood that goes straight up to Hollywood Bowl, no messing with parking, whatever. I picked up some fruit, chips, etc. at lunchtime, and John's going to grab some sandwiches - and maybe an alcoholic beverage or two, and maybe a picnic before John Williams. Yay! Should be fun - John's picking me up in maybe an hour, and off we go.

I meant to mention, when I doodled this for [livejournal.com profile] tikistitch the other day, I was listening to the following from Crowded House's newest album...kinda reminded me of those two...

(There were a bunch of videos with concert footage, but damn if I can't stand that pornstache Neil had - thank gods he shaved it off halfway through the tour...)
