After school a Friday or two ago, Angus announced he wanted to go see some sea lions - I'd mentioned I'd seen they were taking over the Fish Harbor dock in front of the Army Corp of Engineers trailers. I figured it would be a way to work in a few more waymarks as well.

Another walk (since it was Spring Break and the kids were home all week), this time to Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve, where we walked from the parking up to the lagoon north of the flood control channel, on a trail at the base of the mesa. We hadn't been along that path before. While trying to get close to some flowers, I looked down and saw this male side-blotched lizard catching some late-afternoon rays at the front of his burrow in the earth.

OC District Flower Show

My garden club usually tries to put on its own flower show, but sometimes the logistics don't work out. Since my friend Carole became the president of the county district garden clubs, we put on a district wide flower show. I helped by registering everyone's entries, and helping to set up and tear down. I think my favorites are the miniature arrangements. This one is only a couple of inches wide.

These were growing in my friends front yard. I don't know what they're called, but they sure are neat-looking.

We went for a walk downtown after the US Open of Surfing was done for the day. Lots of people watching still be had and we cooled off with some Dairy Queen, strolling around as we ate. These old beach bungalows down there are getting fewer and farther between.

Stimpy really prefers our neighbor's front walk to ours. When he's not telling us it's breakfast time, he can usually be found taking a nap there.

Cesar Chavez Day here in CA - it's a state holiday, so it's one I get off work. The kids don't though, so they came home and said "Why are you home so early?" I pulled a few weeds while I was home, and then later, the Aquarium was having an Autism families night, where the aquarium was open late until 9:00. It was very quiet and relaxed, hardly anyone there, which I suppose was the point - although I also wonder if even the discounted price might have been a hardship for some people.

I had to go to the DMV this morning to renew my driver's license. I was shocked that it took less than an hour or so, despite the innumerable people waiting. The parking lot was jammed so we parked in the residential neighborhood behind the office. These blooming plum? peach? trees (I see a small fuzzy looking fruit in there, so I'm going to go with peach) were in a large yard on the way back to the car and I had to stop and look at them for awhile. I am always impressed by stripy flowers (I have a rose bush with similar flowers), although some were solid red. After I took the picture I noticed a man standing there watering the yard, looking at me suspiciously. Oops.

This weekend was the Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour; a fundraiser in memory of a local gardener/nursery owner. She started the tour herself as a way to raise money for a local women's shelter - after she passed away, others continued putting it on. It's all free; each home has a donation jar that they ask you donate to. And some of the gardens are just breathtaking. A woman in my garden club particpated in it last year, and said she spent 9 hours a day for two months in her yard getting ready for it! There were 48 homes on the tour, but we only visited six, which was plenty.

Well, it's spring; can't be helped. ;p

I belong to a garden club and many of the members grow roses; however, I am not a huge rose fan. I tend to regard them as the poodles of horticulture world (just as goldfish are the poodles of the aquarium fish world) - relatively common, but most of them are overbred, they take a lot of maintenance to look good, pests love them, and they're fussy and spoiled. However, I do own just one. I ordered this one from a catalog years ago; called either 'Peppermint Stick' or 'Candy Cane' (I can't remember which), she's just crazy enough to suit my strange tastes. She also thrives on neglect - I didn't even realize she was blooming until Gareth dragged me out in the backyard to see her today.

By the way - to give you a hint to what kind of gardener I am? Gareth refers to the backyard as the "lotsadirt."

This was a nice surprise when I came home from work - I had forgotten I planted these a couple of years ago. I'm pretty sure they didn't bloom last year.
