[livejournal.com profile] mylife_onceaday has been having a project where we send Sackboy (crocheted by moderator [livejournal.com profile] garnet62900's mom) to each other and spend a week or so taking photos with him around our hometown, or anywhere we happen to go. So he will be showing here in the next few posts. He actually arrived - all the way from Nottingham, England - the day after I got back from a Council meeting, so he missed going to the Bay Area with me - not that I saw anything interesting there.

In case everyone was wondering, Sackboy did arrive here in OC safely last week. He's been finding my backpack quite comfortable, and visiting quite a few places with us. He just missed going to the Bay Area with me, as he arrived the day after I got back, so I hope he'll be able to visit someone else there eventually.

While waiting for boats, I got to watch the Coast Guard helicopter doing an exercise with the LA County lifeguards, lowering and raising a basket from the heli to the small boat. They did this for about half an hour, with the aircraft leaving and flying in a circle, then rejoining the boat and lowering the basket again. I have a whole series of these that might make an animation if I can edit them properly.

The City has been doing a lot of revamping down in the Harbor area - these are some pretty new lamps put up in near the end of Signal St., where we often park to watch for fishing boats coming into the harbor.

Out to do some fun stuff with the fry today; I had the bright idea of showing them the Point Fermin Lighthouse, but unfortunately there was some fair going on, and you couldn't get near it. So we just went up the hill a little bit to the Korean Friendship Bell, a gift to the city of Los Angeles from the people of Korea in 1976.

After finding an Earthcache up in Spokane, I was pleased to see one (of several)a little closer to home. This one is in a neighborhood in San Pedro, only a few blocks up the street from the harbor, where I occasionally go to sample fish. Not a real wonderful neighborhood, but a rarity in that the geology is exposed to view; normally placed like this would be covered up by iceplant or a retaining wall or something. In this case, one layer of ancient seabottom cuts across another, older and tilted at an angle. There are all kinds of fossils here; part of getting credit for this one was emailing in what made the holes in the sediments at the contact. Hint: there were fossils of them spread throughout these sediments.

Did my once-a-month dock stint this morning. I always want to capture the pelicans in their breeding colors (totally white/yellow head) but I always seem to get there when their brown summer neck feathers are growing back in. This guy at least still had his (or her, they look the same) yellow head feathers and red beak/gular pouch colors.

Docks - it was a gorgeous morning after a rain. There were no boats out, but I went up to Pt. Fermin for a few minutes just in case. While I was there a pair of ravens soared by below me, which I thought was a great perspective. I caught this one, perilously close to passing over the sun streak on the water.

I had plans of taking pictures of an out-of-way memorial on Terminal Island while out at the docks today, but the cranes caught my eye. And then all my batteries died.

If these look familiar, you might have seen them in the background of various TV shows and movies; there's a lot of filming that goes on in this area.

I was invited to join a group at Flickr that's nothing but buoys and floats, so I took this with them in mind when I was out at the docks. A corner of LA Harbor, with booms and ship bumpers.

Sometimes we get to see pretty tall ships heading out for a cruise - although this one is smallish compared to some tall ships that visit.
